What Is Hindutva?

What is Hindutva? The Literal Meaning of The Oft-Spoken Word Today is the ‘Hindu Way of Living   with belief in Hindu gods and goddesses, and the precepts of Hindu religion, I.e. Hinduism.’ However,  the Interpretations and Observation of the same vary vastly from one Social Group, Caste or Sect of Hinduism to another, especially between the Upper and Lower Castes of Hindu society, as the principles and values and even the gods that are worshipped differ a lot between them. A lot of confusion and criticism of Hindutva has arisen as a result of this ambiguity about the exact nature of Hindutva.

Of late, some of the practices of staunch Hindus like Cow Vigilantism have drawn a lot of public ire because of the increasing incidence of cases of Mob Lynching of persons found or suspected  of abducting Cows for Sale to Slaughter Houses, or for Beef eating, mostly of Muslims, which has strained  the relations between Hindus and Muslims more than ever before. Another allegation against Hindu Society is the discrimination and ill treatment of Dalits (who are the untouchables and the lowest caste of the Hindu Society), like exploiting their labour and women, as well as denying them the use of basic facilities like getting Water from Public Wells and other sources. They are also refused entry to temples frequented  by the  Upper caste Hindus, which is an obstacle to Unity among the Upper and Lower castes of Hindus, and has been instrumental in inducing many Lower Caste people to get converted, to Christianity, Islam and Buddhism. (2)Coming to the different SECTIONS OF HINDUS:

The followers of the SANATAN HINDU DHARMA OF THE EARLY VEDIC ARYANS, AND THE ARYA SAMAJ, as well as ‘The Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Association’, subscribe to the Vedic worship of the Five Main Elements of the Universe, and the 33 main Gods with emphasis on the Brahmanical Trinity- Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Preserver and Mahesh/Shiva the Ultimate Disposer- as also the Cow, but Do Not Perform Idol Worship.

The DRAVIDIAN Castes, and now practically all the Hindus, including Brahmins and the other Upper castes of Aryan origin, are sworn Worshippers of Idols, and are devotees of Shiva Parivar(family) including Shiva, Devi(Parvati), Ganesh, Kartikeya, and the incarna- tions ofVishnu, and also Brahma, according to some authors.

Most of the Hindus worship the Cow, but it is only the radical Hindus who resort to violence in the name of CowVigilantism and Sites for construction of Temples like RamMandir at Ayodhya.

Still different are the religious customs of the Adivasi or Aboriginal tribes of India like the NATH PANTH/Sect of GORAKHNATH and Aghoris. The Nath Panth are said to do Tantra-Mantra, that is, Magical Orgies accompanied by chanting of related hymns to cure people of ‘possession’ by ghosts or evil spirits. They do not however perform the offensive carnal and sexual rituals that are indulged in by the Aghoris. They are the devotees of Lord Dattatreya, whom they consider as an incarnation of Lord Shiva (unlike the upper Hindu castes who regard Dattatreya as the joint incarnation of  Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh/Shiva, but particularly Shiva).

The  AGHORIS (meaning Fearless) are a related sect residing in the forests,( from whom the Nath Panth is said to have been separated by Gorakhnath with shedding of their evil customs). They are supposed to be Shaivite, Ash-smeared Naga(Nude)Sadhus, who leave their hair loose in tangled knots. They also worship the Mother Goddess Kaali, and Shiva as ‘Kaal Bhairav’, the Mother’s Consort.  However, they have certain customs or rituals which are horrendous and obnoxious to the other Hindus, like Human Sacrifice, Cannibalism, Sexual Orgies with Corpses, and Sorcery or Exorcism

These AGHORIS ARE the Tribes and their rituals NOTICED BY tourists from OTHER NATIONS    of the World FIRST, AND ARE SCANDALISING TO THEM, and THEREFORE REPORTED MORE PROMINENTLY than anything else, as if those rituals are an important part of Hindutva.         The Upper Caste Traditional Hindus, namely, the SANATANI Hindus, become indignant and PROTEST vehemently AT THIS EMPHATIC PUBLICISATION OF THE AGHORI RITUALS AS IF  they are a significant or MAIN part of HINDUTVA, and deny that their backward and repulsive practices are a common feature of Hindutva. YET, the Hindu Society, which incorporated these tribal sects as a section of it in ancient times, continues to tag them to itself, notwithstanding the fact that their above mentioned beliefs and rituals of Human Sacrifice and Cannibalism etc. are in direct or diagonal contrast and violation to those of the other Hindu Castes and communities, which abhor and condemn even Cow slaughter, leave alone Human Sacrifice for appeasement of any god/goddess!

All this confusion and resultant humiliation on account of the ghastly and repulsive customs of these backward and ignorant sects of Hindu Society before people of the Western Nations and Culture, is because of the educated Hindus not trying to enlighten and reform the Aghoris and other backward castes to shed their bloody and perverse rituals due to Superstition.         As long as educated and ENLIGHTENED HINDUS do not lead the way to INSTIL HOMOGENEOUS IMPROVED CONCEPTS/PRECEPTS in keeping with modern times, IN ENTIRE HINDU SOCIETY, by weeding out the practice of undesirable, harmful and outdated customs and rituals ( including Jallikattu in Soutth India, which harasses Bulls and Cow Vigillantism besides the obviously perverse and hideous customs and rituals of the Aghoris, and superstitious practices from all the castes /sects that are acknowledged as Hindus, the exact NATURE and understanding OF ”HINDUTVA’  WILL always REMAIN VAGUE and open to Misapprehension and Harsh Criticism in all corners in the World. AT LEAST, the learned and evolved sections of Hindu Society should make it clear to the World that they are not in agreement or unison with those abiding with the dubious, superstitious and outdated practices of the Aghoris and other related sects, and vote them out of the Hindu fold !

For they are not Shaivas but ‘Shaktas’, that is, devotees of  a non-Aryan goddess of some primitive tribes.

Should They be Outcast from the Hindu Society for their cadaver – ous customs or Shouldn’t they? They should first be made to understand why their practices are wrong and urged to give them up. However, if they are adamant in sticking to their beliefs and habits, they should be cast out of the Hindu Society with liability of prosecution for them! If Hindu Society cannot be firm enough to do that, it will always stand out as one of the ‘Heathen’ or ‘Pagan’ societies the World over!

(4)In my opinion, the BEST type of HiNDUTVA:

The Best way of Practice of HiNDUTVA is that propounded by Swami Vivekananda and         the Ramakrishna Paramhansa Mission, whose members practice Love for Humanity and  acceptance of Life as well as Tolerance of other people ‘s nature as it is, and Meditation as a way of communicating and achieving communion with the Supreme Spirit. No religious text    of any religion has appealed to me or inspired me as much as the writings and personal biographies of Vivekananda and his Guru, Ramakrishna Paramhansa. I felt an immense sense of Peace during my visit to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial at the Southernmost tip of India,   in the midst of the Indian Ocean, and swept by the waves of the ocean, which I have not experienced anywhere else. There is No rush or jostling one another (भगदड़) of the devotees or pilgrims just for a momentary glimpse of the idol, or accidents as at other temples, and hardly any tedious ceremonial rituals. Just Meditation on The Supreme Spirit and Heavenly Peace in the Natural Oceanic Background!

(5) REALLY speaking, HINDUISM, besides praying to the Supreme formless and abstract, Omnipresent, Omniscient and Omnipotent Spirit or Power, and the many deities which are parts of it, ALSO involves the WORSHIP OF all forms and elements of NATURE and the Universe, like the (a)’Gods of the ‘Realm of Light’ or Adityas, including the various aspects of the Sun; (b) Gods of the Realm of Air or Maruts namely Indra (the God of Thunder and Rain, as well as War), Vayu(Air), Parjanya(Heavy Rain),etc; and (c) Gods of the Realm of the Earth, viz. Terrestrial Gods or Vasus, that is, Agni, Jal, Prithvi, Trees. Therefore, ONE of the

MAIN DHARMAS or Duties of Hindus is the CONSERVATION and Nurturing OF the ENVIRONMENT, which would return the care with its bounties to all living beings.

Unfortunately, very few Hindus realise the importance of the Natural treasures in today’s

Industrialised and Mechanised World, and have replaced forests with concrete jungles and factories in the name of the ‘Industrial Revolution’. As a Penalty, the whole World is Paying the Price of the indiscriminate destruction of Nature the Curse of Global Warming!

Likewise, the reason for worshipping the Cow and the Bull is essential for protecting and SAVING THE LIVESTOCK, as the nutrition of the early humans depended upon it. However, due to religious emphasis on the Cow exclusivity, only Cow slaughter and beef eating is banned. Actually, the Goat is the Poor Man’s Cow, but people don’t have qualms about killing Goats and eating Mutton.

The UNDERSTANDING Of the VALUE of ALL LIFE, that is, Nature with its Flora and Fauna(Plants, Animals and Birds), and advising others against killing livestock, unless humans are starving without it in absence of vegetables in some regions in some seasons, and if an animal is dangerous to human life, is the real Dharma of Hindus, not Lynching all and sundry for suspicion of cow slaughter and beef eating!

POINT FOR THOUGHT:- IS IT POSSIBLE TO DIVIDE THE JAMMU, LADAKH andKASHMIR STATE on religious and ethnic basis [Into 3 parts: (a)JAMMU STATE (joined with EASTERN KASHMIR as needed by the Pandit Minority, viz. the tehsils of the Kashmir Valley housing the places of religious importance for the Hindus viz.the part ofAnantnag district from Pahalgam in the North to Anantnag Tehsil in the Southwest of the district, and the Tulmula Tehsil, Baltal and Sonamarg) but WITHOUT THE ROHINGYA MUSLIMS WHO MAY BE SHIFTED TO SOME OTHER PLACE IN/UNDER INDIA,e.g. the ANDAMAN-NICOBAR ISLANDS,(which is not u/Article 370); (b)LEH-LADAKH as a separate province or linked with Jammu by a fairly broad Passage through the lower border of the Zanskar Tehsil of the Kargil District (adjacent to Himachal Pradesh),and the (c) KARGIL district of Ladakh, (joined only if they agree), with the Remaining (d)Major part of KASHMIR Valley as SEPARATE KASHMIR- KARGIL (LADAKH) PROVINCE, but  UNDER THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT (Kashmir being as it was, just after Kashmir was sold to Maharaja of Jammu and Ladakh,i.e before it merged withJammu-Ldk – Except for the far WesternPart Gone into Azad JK, as also the Eastern area required by Kashmiri Pandits and other Hindus of Jammu+ Kashmir WITHOUT ABOLITION OF THE ARTICLES 370/35-A OF INDIAN CONSTITUTION ]             -TO QUELL THE LOCAL HINDU-MUSLIM FIGHT FOR POWER OVER THE TOTAL JAMMU and  KASHMIR STATE?       (with separate Chief Ministers, as in the different Union Territories under the Indian Union)  .                  It is well known that Kashmir and Jammu were differentPrincely states existing as separate colonies under the British Sovereignty before Kashmir was sold by the British in 1846 AD to Raja Gulab Singh, the Dogra Maharajah of Jammu, (who had already conquered the whole of Ladakh, a Tibetan Kingdom, including Baltistan). Kashmir was not an integral part of Jammu and Ladakh, from the begining. Neither were Jammu and Ladakh   an original part of Kashmir, as they were ethnically different states. Therefore, the Kashmiris cannot claim for right over Jammu and Ladakh besides Kashmir as part of their demand for ‘Independent  Kashmir’! (However, the Kashmiri  Muslims should remember that the Kashmiri Pandits were also natives of the Kashmir valley, in fact from earlier times than themselves, and some of the Muslims, viz. the Shaikhs are descendents of, and converts from the Kashmiri Hindus,so it is wrong of them to drive them out from their homeland from time to time since their arrival in Kashmir in 1339, then in 1947 and from 1990 till today, and deny them their share of the land, simply because they are not Muslims or unwilling to convert to Islam! )                       The British are said to have sold Kashmir and later Gilgit to the Jammu Maharajah because the Brits were in need of money, after which they were merged with Jammu to form the combined State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, including Gilgit- Baltistan despite the protest by the people of Kashmir and Gilgit which is now a part of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK)to the sale and merger of their lands with Jammu, and their demand for being allowed to retain their ‘Independent Kashmir’ and’Azadi fromJammu’ which was not heeded (which themselves were wrong deals committed by the British in my opinion, and are at the root of the present unrest in POK and Kashmir. For What Moral Right did a Foreign Sovereignty have to ‘Sell’ a Princely State under its rule to another unrelated state like a ‘Slave Nation’?) As a Result  of this merger instead of keeping and ruling the two bestowed kingdoms as separate from the main State of Jammu, Pakistan took away the Poonch block of Jammu along with part of Kashmir, and the Kashmiri Muslims now demand restoration of not only the Kashmir Valley but the whole Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh State to them as Their ‘Independent Kashmir’ and’Azadi from India’!   If the British needed money so badly, they should have given only that part of Kashmir, of 900, which has now been marked out by KPs as the area of Hindu religious interest for their ‘Panun Kashmir’, that is about 4% of the nearly 23000 area of the Original Kashmir State [which included the Muzaffar- abad Block of the present’Azad Kashmir’ comprising the Muzaffarabad district, JhelumValley (last part), and Neelam Valley district (all now under Pakistani Occu- pation), besides the IndianAdministered Kashmir Valley ,as Kashmir was before it was linked with Jammu (of which Poonch and Mirpur blocks of AJK too were a part till 22 October 1947),and with Ladakh+ Gilgit/Balti-  stan to form the combined State of Jammu and Kashmir] . The area sought by KP is equivalent to the 4% population of KPs, rather 6% non-Muslims including the other Hindus viz. Dogras and Sikhs, that was there in Kashmir before 22nd Oct. 1947 as it was given to the Maharajah of Jammu. The British could have collected the remaining amount from the other 560+ princely states under them by way of Tax!                             However, The POINT is, if Kashmir and Jammu could exist as separate colonies under the  British Sovereignty uptil 1846 AD when Kashmir was sold by the British(only due to monetary constraints, and not because of   any pre-existing proprietory right of Jammu on it), they can also be held by India as different Units under it while keeping both provinces subject to the Article 370 but with separate Chief Ministers, and neither the people of Kashmir nor ofJammu, nor the leaders of the local political parties should have objection to it.                                         Partial removal of the Article from Jammu alone may not be possible, for it is learned that the IndianConstitution does not provide for partial abolition of the Article in the state, so that either it has to be abolished in the Whole J-K state or None of the provinces selectively.                                  HENCE, now too,in view of the constant clashes and bloodshed between  the Indian Defense Forces, viz. the Army/ CRPF Jawans, and the Separatists accompanied by Pakistani terrorists, that has disturbed the atmosphere and jeopardised the security of the other citizens and sections of the Jammu-Kashmir State, it needs Serious Consideration, WHETHER PROVIN- CIAL DIVISION OF JAMMU/KASHMIR State –                   into(1)The HINDU majority JAMMU province (and if feasible, the Ganderbal district housing the Kheer Bhavani Temple and Manasbal Lake, as also Pahalgam tehsil, the site of the Holy Amarnath Shrine, plus Anantnag tehsil of the Anantnag district with Mattan, the place of the Martand Sun Temple, of the Kashmir Valley, as the right or share of the Kashmiri Pandits, as one Unit) WITHOUT the Rohingya and Bangladeshi Muslims in their midst, as a separate sub – province, or joined with Jammu, instead of with the rest of the Kashmir valley due to theHindu – Muslim tensions therein. (2)The remaining (Muslim Dominated) Kashmir Valley; and     (3)Leh Ladakh- as separate province or jointly with Jammu, and the sequestered part of the Kashmir valley for Non- Muslims,      WITH- or if that is not feasible – WITHOUT ABOLITION OF ARTICLES 370 and 35-A in any of the Three provinces (BUT, with an independent Hindu Chief Minister/Deputy Chief Minister with independent charge for at least Jammu Province) – as it is likely to enable easier and effective Law and Order Control in the Kashmir Valley, Jammu and Ladakh!     This should have been done by Raja Gulab Singh on getting the possession of Kashmir , in1846 AD.                         NOT removing Art.370 and Art. 35A may be GOOD in a way, as it cannot be said whether the removal of the Article will lead to influx of more Muslims like the Afghani Sunni Pathans /Talibans who crept into the Kashmir valley since 1986 and started separatism and terrorism by instiga- ting the local Muslims, or the Rohingya/ Bangladeshi Muslims from outside India, whom we have not been able to evict till today, as also from within India, OR enough Hindus from other states to keep the demographic balance! For then, there cannot be a discrimination policy, that only Dogras and Kashmiri Pandits or only Hindus can come and settle in the J+K state, and that Muslims, Christians, Sikhs – that is, Indians of other religions, or ethnically different communities- are forbidden!         However, if the Article has to be retained, some way should be found to resettle the Rohingya+ Bangladeshi Muslim refugees, who are not the natives of Jammu, elsewhere in India,e.g, in the Northeastern states where the population is ethnically closer to the Rohingyas       (many of whom are Mongoloid) and where the Art.370 does not exist), and which too  is populated by Mongoloid people, and would be the easiest place to shift them to, if it is not possible to drive them out from India, (nor let  them stay in Kashmir Valley, or anywhere else in India); Or in the Andaman- Nicobar Islands that are under India, if the Indian Government has much sympathy for them.     Coming back to J,K and Ladakh, the KARGILdistrict of Ladakh which anyway is ethnically and religionwise different and separate from Jammu, and an annexed territory, may remain with the Kashmir Valley(with which it is connected through the Bandipora district of the Valley), and under the Muftis  /Abdullahs as part of the State of Kashmir and Kargil-Ladakh for the time being. Kargil can be separated subsequently.             Leh-Ladakh may also be made a separate province underArt 370.       The bi-/trifurcation will also facilitate the local Hindus and Buddhists of Jammu+ Ladakh respectively to exercise their regional majority rights, and to vote a Hindu or Buddhist Chief Minister to power in Jammu and Ladakh!                                                                                             The PROBLEM is,”WHO Will Bell The Muftis and Abdullahs to make them acquiesce to this type of Amendment for Bifurcation of J+K for Administrative Convenience, and HOW, even if there may not be any Constitutional Contra- indication to it?       This Objective can’t be achieved by imposition of the President’s Rule, for the President is more likely to support the Central Govt., and as a corollary, the J + K Govt. (It is not known if some staunch and powerful Hindu like Jagmohan is there now who can be appointed as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir). Therefore, the People of Jammu will have to adopt some other strategy. This can perhaps be induced by making it understood to ‘Whomever It May Concern’ that ignoring or taking unduly for granted the allegience of people of Jammu, Kashmiri Pandits and the people of Ladakh, will cost Central Govt the votes of the People of Jammu and Ladakh besides the Kashmiri Pandits who have been appealing for ‘Panun Kashmir’ since three decades, in the future! If utterly necessary, the support of the entire lobby of the Hindu allies of BJP viz. RSS Chief , Shiv Sena and VHP, may have to be roped in to bring pressure on the  concerned leaders in the Central Govt., and on the local Muslim Political Party leaders, for agreeing in the parliament to separate Jammu from Kashmir soon to protect the culture of the Dogras, as they were the Original Rulers of Jammu-Kashmir till independ- ence from the British and dissolution of the PrincelyState,on which Kashmir was bestowed by the British, Not vice versa. So the Hindu  Dogras should not be allowed to be reduced to a minority and crushed by the Muslim Chief Ministers of the state- Mufti/ Abdullah, and if such a situation has come to happen due to the linking of J+K as one state, which leads to the whole state becoming Muslim majority state,  with the consequence of only the Muslims succeeding in being elected as the Chief Ministers, (and the Muslim separatists of the Kashmir valley forming the JK -Liberation Front thinking that the Whole State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh belongs to them),it is a sinister development and is a strong ground for early dissociation of the Hindu majority Jammu province from the Kashmir Valley, before its majority status is wiped out by infiltration of outsiders like the Rohingya and Bangladeshi Muslims, with the connivance of J+K Chief Ministers! After all, Jammu was the original kingdom of  the Dogras, while Kashmir was a land ‘sold’ to the Maharajah of Jammu by British, not the other way round. So now if the buyer state Jammu wishes to free itself from diminution by the residents of the purchased land, and become a separate province, independent of Kashmir, though under Article 370, has it No legal or moral right to do so?                         Point for Thought!
